There are two different types of treatments for people living with dementia: symptomatic and disease modifying. Symptomatic treatments aim to improve the symptoms of living with dementia, but they do not stop the disease from progressing. Disease-modifying treatments aim to tackle what is going wrong inside brain cells directly and to stop or slow down the death of brain cells, which slows down the progression of disease.
