We are excited to announce the arrival of two Nene that are now residing in our Wetlands Exhibit. Nene, also known as Hawaiian Geese are native to the Hawaiian Islands and are the world's rarest goose! The Nene faced extinction in the 1960's after invasive species were introduced to their habitat and were classified as Endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 1967. Whoa, nēnē! Check out these two low-flying Hawaiian geese as they dip into Halemaʻumaʻu and get a gander of the new lava. Nēnē are often observed flying over Kīlauea caldera after sunrise and before sunset as they make their way between roosting areas and foraging grounds.
