A "radome" is a weatherproof enclosure that protects a radar antenna. Radomes are built to be invisible to the radar and have a special coating to shed water so radar data is not affected. Periodically radomes are replaced as part of standard maintenance. Located at NSSL, the Advanced Technology Demonstrator (ATD) is the first full-scale, S-band, dual-polarization phased array radar (PAR) built from the ground up and designed specifically for use as a weather radar.
