The State Fire Marshal supports fire departments in each municipality in Minnesota. They investigate fires, educate the public on fire safety and conduct fire safety inspections.

The Minnesota State Fire Marshal division helps law enforcement and the public with fire inspections in schools, childcare facilities, hotels, correctional facilities, schools and other buildings.

The Fire Marshal Department was created in 1913 and the SFM division became part of the newly created Minnesota Department of Public Safety in 1970. The SFM division has enforced the Minnesota State Fire Code since 1975.
