NBC and Warner Bros. had planned for the 14th season to be the series' last one and for former regular characters to appear in most episodes including the forecast series finale.

After being passed over for Chief of the ER, Pratt is looking for a hospital that will appreciate his talents. A former employee of the ER brings her sick son in for tests. Neela's cousin is in town for a visit, and Morris and Harold compete for her affections.

Season 15 saw the final additions to the main cast, with David Lyons signing on as Dr. Simon Brenner (recurring character towards the end of Season 14) and Angela Bassett as Dr. Catherine "Cate" Banfield.

The original cast consisted of Anthony Edwards as Dr. Mark Greene, George Clooney as Dr. Doug Ross, Sherry Stringfield as Dr. Susan Lewis, Noah Wyle as John Carter, and Eriq La Salle as Dr. Peter Benton. Julianna Margulies guest starred in the pilot as Carol Hathaway before becoming part of the regular cast.
