Well it turns out that Saturn has a polar vortex too, and on the north pole of Saturn, conditions are such that it appears as a hexagon. On earth, the polar vortex and the jet stream that surrounds it have a wonky shape. This is because the earth has mountains, oceans, and all sorts of other features that affect the path of wind and weather.

Apr 28, 2017 · This is due to Saturn's north pole tilting towards the Sun (ie, it's becoming summer up there). This has caused an increase in haze in its atmosphere, changing its overall hue. Now, the blue eye! Why is it blue? Well, Saturn's polar vortex is a gigantic storm. The blue eye is like the eye of the storm, where skies are "clear".

There’s way more going on with Saturn than just this, but it’s a similar idea. If Saturn was rotating a bit faster or a bit slower, or if the polar jet-stream was moving at a different speed, there might be a different number of peaks. You could get a pentagon, a square, a triangle, or other shapes depending on the conditions present.

The spinning vortex of Saturn's north polar storm resembles a deep red rose of giant proportions surrounded by green foliage in this false-color image from NASA's Cassini spacecraft. Measurements have sized the eye at a staggering 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) across with cloud speeds as fast as 330 miles per hour (150 meters per second).
