Los Angeles students and teachers return to class for the new academic year Thursday under a cloud of apprehension after a summer filled with immigration raids and amid worries that schools could become a target in the Trump administration’s aggressive crackdown.

SEIU 721 and other labor groups rallied in MacArthur Park and elsewhere in Los Angeles throughout the day on Tuesday.

The immigration worksite raids in June and the smaller number of street-level stops in the following weeks have not brought Los Angeles to a standstill. But it is a city diminished.
