A police officer has died from injuries sustained while responding to a shooting outside the headquarters of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is near Emory University. The Atlanta police department said the incident, which took place on Friday, involved a "single shooter" who is now dead.

Officer David Rose, 33, was shot while responding to the gunfire, the DeKalb County Police Department said in a news release. He was transported to nearby Emory University Hospital where he died of his injuries. Newsweek has contacted the police department for further comment via email.

A gunman opened fire on the buldings of the CDC headquarters and the Emory University sprawling, open-access campus was put on lockdown Friday. Sources told CNN the shooter may have targeted the CDC over personal health concerns he blamed on the Covid-19 vaccine.
