Hurricane Gil weakened into a tropical storm in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Saturday and was not forecast to threaten land. The Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm's maximum sustained winds dropped to 70 mph (110 kph).

Tropical Storm Gil is showing signs of weakening as it moves over cooler waters. Satellite images show a decline in convection, or rising air that indicates strengthening or maintenance of strength, especially in the western half of the storm, downgrading Gil from a hurricane to a tropical storm with sustained winds around 70 mph.
