Despite being a prominent figure in NFL history and a former Dallas Cowboys star, Deion Sanders was never a serious candidate for the team’s head coaching job

For the Dallas Cowboys, it’s Brian Schottenheimer time. Could it have been Prime Time instead? Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed Monday that, yes, he and Pro Football Hall of Famer/Colorado head coach Deion Sanders spoke before the team eventually hired Schottenheimer as the 10th head coach in franchise history.

On Friday the Cowboys hired offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who has been with the team since 2022, giving him his first-ever head coaching position. Afterward, Irvin went to his YouTube channel to show his dismay over Sanders not receiving the job.

If the Dallas Cowboys hire Deion Sanders as the next head coach, chalk Coach Prime's son Shedeur up as someone who would support the move.

"I don't know what will happen with coach Schottenheimer and the Dallas Cowboys, but Jerry Jones is a shrewd, shrewd businessman, and this (Deion Sanders) opportunity, I'm shocked he did not see." - Michael Irvin.

Unlike NFL teams that have to follow protocols to interview current NFL coaches, there is no such red tape to navigate when a franchise wants to chat with a college coach. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones could have Deion over to The Star, or a Starbucks, and that’s an interview.

The move was an interesting one for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, as big names like Deion Sanders were floated around before they decided to go with someone who was on the staff this past season. Two former Cowboys receivers didn't love the move.
