Rory McIlroy has suggested that the PGA Tour could scale back the number of tournaments it stages each year in order to combat “fatigue” among golf’s fanbase.

Rory McIlroy said Tuesday he understands how the golf consumer might be fatigued with all the different forms of the game that now exist and even suggested lessening the number of events on the PGA Tour could help.

The four-time major champion has a lot of thoughts on the state of pro golf but said “we shouldn’t try to dumb down golf to appeal to more people.”

Tom McKibbin of Northern Ireland has spurned the advice from mentor Rory McIlroy by giving up a PGA Tour card to join Saudi-backed LIV Golf. McKibbin, a 22-year-old who won his only European tour event in 2023,
