For more than a week, GTE Corp. has blitzed the airwaves, encouraging residents of Pinellas and west Pasco counties to say goodbye to area code 813 and start using 727.

The East Bay is getting a new area code. It's 341. One expert says it's not big deal, but residents feel the 510 area code is a part of their identity.

However, the hat omits the 727 area code which covers most of Pinellas County and part of Pasco County including Tropicana Field’s area code.

The Florida Public Service Commission decided this week to assign a new area code – 727 – to telephone customers living within those areas.
