Indiana sees historic jump in third grade reading scores; retention data still pending
Indiana’s latest reading assessment scores showed the largest year-to-year improvement since the state began IREAD testing in 2013, rising nearly five percentage points from last year, according to new results released Wednesday.

This year's IREAD scores showed 87.3% of Hoosier third-graders demonstrating proficiency on the state exam. The results were almost five percentage points higher than in 2024 and represented the largest single-year increase since the test was first administered in 2013.
The proposed 2026 Indianapolis budget includes a $400,000 commitment to Circle City Readers, a one-on-one tutoring program.
