Juneteenth marks the events of June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas when the last Black slaves of the Confederacy were ordered free following the arrival of Union troops. The Civil War had ended on April 9, and the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued on January 1, 1863.

Juneteenth became an official federal holiday starting in 2021 under former President Joe Biden to recognize the freedom of formerly enslaved Black people. On 1865, Union General Gordon Granger led troops into Texas to announce the end of the Civil War and slavery.
