Invest 98L in the eastern Caribbean is expected to strengthen into a tropical depression or tropical storm over the next few days.

As Invest 98L lingers over the Windward Islands, forecasters say the system could become the next tropical depression or tropical storm Melissa in the coming days.

The National Hurricane Center has designated Invest AL98 with a 70% chance of developing into a tropical storm within the next 48 hours and a 90% chance over the next seven days. Current expectations are for it to have no impact in the United States, though there is still a large amount of uncertainty in the overall track of the system.

“As far ahead as we can reasonably forecast – about 10 days – there is no sign of a threat to the mainland U.S.,” Norcross wrote.
