Hurricane Erin has turned into a Category 5 storm, rapidly powering up over the course of 24 hours, the National Hurricane Center said.

The Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are expected to see heavy rainfall, up to 6 inches in some places, and life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
