COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KOAA) — The suspect in the attack towards a group of pro-Israel demonstrators in Boulder was pending asylum after arriving in the United States in 2022.

Emails included as an exhibit in El Gamal’s Colorado case show she exchanged a series of one-line emails with her immigration attorney beginning at 10:36 a.m. Tuesday.

Soliman and his family migrated to the U.S. from Egypt in August 2022. The Department of Homeland Security said he overstayed his visa and had filed for asylum that September.

The F.B.I. said in a court filing that the suspect, an Egyptian citizen who had sought asylum in the U.S., brought more than a dozen incendiary devices to a march in support of hostages in Gaza.

The Colorado investigator in the case of Utah student Caroline Dias Goncalves has been placed on leave as officials probe events that led to her detention by ICE officials.

Christina Brown, an immigration attorney with the Colorado Asylum Center, called recent developments "unprecedented." "In the 12 years I've practiced law, that has never happened before," Brown said.
